US CONNECTIONS

As well as giving us legendary outlaw Robin Hood, rebellious spirits, a rich history and sporting glory, Nottinghamshire was also home to many of the Puritans who sailed on the Mayflower. The county was central to the movement that triggered the Great Migration period, carrying thousands from England to the distant shores of America.

Mayflower Pilgrims including Brewster and Bradford, shaped their Separatist beliefs among its ancient churches and villages, and Methodist preacher William Booth founded the global Salvation Army here.

In addition, bomber crews from RAF NO. 5 Group, tens of thousands of US Airborne troops and plane and glider crews made a home in Nottinghamshire. Many completed their training here before joining the ght on D-Day and during Operation Market Garden (the Battle of Arnhem) and the Ardennes Campaign (the Battle of the Bulge).
